Senior High

The Nuts and Bolts of Gethsemane’s Goals for
Sr. High Youth Ministry

A 12-member Youth Council ( 7th – 12th ) is tasked with representing their peers to those planning program, encouraging them to participate regularly in the life of the church after Confirmation, and praying for them. They meet monthly with the youth director.

Sr. High youth are invited to assist in the Confirmation program. 11 are currently serving as Jr. Guides each Wednesday.
An annual summer Mission Trip is planned for 10th – 12th graders. 21 youth and 5 adult chaperones are registered for a servant event in Puerto Rico in June 2008. Several fundraisers are planned to help pay for these trips, and the rest is out of pocket for families, although additional scholarships can be found as needed. ( Very little of the annual youth program budget has been used for these. )
Our regular Wednesday night fellowship is called “Journey”, meeting from 8 – 9:30.
Our Sunday morning discussion is called “House”, meeting from 10:10 – 10:50.

We’re slowly gathering steam in having students generate content for our youth website: glcyouth.org .
Cameras and videocameras travel with us most of the time, so that we can share with the congregation highlights of our activities.

Additional optional activities ( some suggested by Youth Council )are planned throughout the year to give students further opportunities to build and strengthen friendships and faith. These are often in conjunction with junior high youth, and occasionally with other church groups. For most events students are welcome to invite guests. Depending on length of event, such gatherings will feature community prayer, at least, plus brief devotions, Bible study or topical faith discussion.

Recent events have included:

  • Camping and skiing weekends
  • Overnight “lock-ins”
  • Attending Christian music concerts
  • Lutheran college visits/retreats
  • Congregational Talent Show
  • Youth-led Worship
  • Creating a mural in the Youth Room
  • Seminary “Previews”
  • Joining GLC’s Habitat for Humanity project

Overall goal: to have each sr. high youth continue to be plugged into church at GLC, continuing to grow in their faith and to be in relationship with their peers, the youth director and other caring adults!
